The semantic engine is programmed to recognize the presence of concepts in the learner's response. In a response, the presence of a concept is indicated by the presence of a specific word. A range of synonyms are specified as acceptable. A correct response may consist of multiple concepts compounded together, such as "identify contamination". The concept "identify" has many synonyms as does the concept "contamination". The system allows an unlimited number of concepts to be compounded in this way, allowing a large range of acceptable answers.
